The Most Beautiful Italian Villages in Emilia-Romagna are 15: they are all unique in their own way and they share the same desire to redeem themselves and make themselves known.
Here is a list of all of them, from Piacenza to Rimini, with the link to the related card we made for our section Villages:
- Castell’Arquato, Middle Ages among the vineyards
- Bobbio, cinema and legends
- Vigoleno, the fortified village
- Gualtieri, the town of the Bentivoglio Family
- Compiano, and its Castle
- Montechiarugolo, on the slopes of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines
- Fiumalbo, a gem at the foot of Monte Cimone
- Dozza, murals and good wine
- Brisighella, the cradle of hospitality
- Bagno di Romagna, the thermal village
- Verucchio, from Etruscans to the Malatesta’s Family
- San Leo, a borderland of mysterious charm
- San Giovanni in Marignano, Malatesta’s barn
- Montefiore Conca, a window with a view on the Conca Valley
- Montegridolfo, the village between two rivers
The Club of the Most Beautiful Italian Villages, born in March 2001 thanks to the ANCI (National Association of Italian Municipalities), aims to promote the great heritage of history, art, culture, environment and traditions of small Italian villages, often less known and less visited by tourists.
That same marginality that over the years threatened to cause depopulation and abandonment of these villages, nowadays makes them the true custodians of the most authentic identity of our Country. It is an intangible heritage that the Club seeks to preserve through its activity of protection, recovery and valorization.
To be admitted to the Club, each Municipality must meet a series of standards specified as essentials in the Carta di Qualità and in the Regolamento, such as:
to have no more than 2.000 inhabitants in the village and no more than 15.000 in the related Municipality;
to possess a certified architectural and/or natural heritage;
to possess a high level of urban quality (in terms of accessibility and preservation) and architectural quality (in terms of harmony and homogeneity);
to demonstrate, through concrete facts, a desire to valorize, develop and promote their heritage.
If a village demonstrates to have these characteristics, it can become part of this exceptional club, which now includes approximately 260 centers and is a true quality certificate for visitors…try it for yourself!

Hi Elisa,
Thanks for the great post! I was wondering if you had any recommendations for the village which is best to visit if you don’t have access to a car but on the hunt for amazing restaurants, local produce and access to foodie tours?
Thanks
Lindsay
